The Jacksonville Brotherhood of Police Officers started in 1975 as the Negro Police Savings Club. Initially it was a social club where African American police officers in Jacksonville could fellowship at one another’s homes and contribute money to be placed in a savings account for them, similar to a Christmas Fund. Over time the group became more socially active and had concerns about the treatment of African American officers and their roles in the community. Some years later the name was changed to the Jacksonville Brotherhood of Police Officers. The organizations objectives were to be a bridge between the African American community and the police force and to ensure minority hiring and promotions within the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were carried out in a manner that was fair to all. The organization was always known for its charitable work, however over the last 10 years it has begun to provide more charity outreach to the community than ever before. Its membership is comprised of active and retired law enforcement officers ONLY with the acceptation of one local pastor (Dr. John Allen Newman) who was very instrumental in the administration of what was considered the “all black test”. This was a hiring exam given by the city in the late 1980’s. Only African Americans were allowed to take that test which was for the recruitment of black officers.
The organization has made its mark in the city of Jacksonville. Over the last few years they have hosted annual back to school rallies, Anti violence community rallies, provided Christmas parties for entire elementary schools, fed the community for thanksgiving and given more than $50,000 in educational scholarships. The organization has made its mark in the city of Jacksonville. Over the last few years they have hosted annual back to school rallies, Anti violence community rallies, provided Christmas parties for entire elementary schools, fed the community for thanksgiving and given more than $50,000 in educational scholarships. The "Brotherhood" continues to provide many acts of charity throughout the city.
In addition they are a bridge between the African American community and the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. They regularly meet with city leaders to advocate on behalf of African Americans in law enforcement and to share issues and concerns of residents of the African American Community in an effort to ensure fairness, awareness and inclusion.
The "Brotherhood" has quietly supported many charitable causes and acted as an advocate for many including small children and law enforcement officers. The "Brotherhood" has quietly supported many charitable causes and acted as an advocate for many including small children and law enforcement officers. For the last 40 years all of their work has been done solely on membership dues and donations from the organization's members, both active and retired law enforcement officers. The members do not receive recognition for their work nor do they seek to be recognized. Their efforts to be a voice for the voiceless, provide opportunities for higher education and promote diversity continues to be a priority. These are necessities in our city.
